Patrick J. Machin, P.E.

P.E. | PRINCIPAL

Patrick is a graduate of Michigan Technological University with a degree in civil engineering, specializing in structural engineering. He strives to be an innovative, out-of-the-box thinker while building his diverse experience as a field inspector, design engineer, township and village engineer, and project manager. Patrick is a licensed professional engineer in more than 35 states and a licensed builder in the State of Michigan, bringing extensive expertise and a forward-thinking approach to the firm’s projects.  

Kurt A. Schultz

SENIOR PROJECT DESIGNER | FAA PART 107 UAV PILOT

Kurt is a graduate of ITT Technical Institute with a degree in applied computer-aided drafting technology. With over 24 years of experience in AutoCAD drafting, he has contributed to a wide variety of projects across multiple disciplines. At MEI, Kurt supports the civil and structural teams by preparing precise and detailed plans that ensure accurate and timely project delivery. 

Matthew W. Hawkins, P.E.

P.E. | Senior PROJECT MANAGER

Matt is a graduate of Michigan Technological University with a degree in civil engineering, specializing in structural engineering. In addition to his structural background, he has contributed to a wide range of site civil and construction projects, including operations, inspections, and project reviews. Matt brings a practical, team-oriented approach to the firm and is both a licensed professional engineer and a licensed residential builder in the State of Michigan. 

Eric R. Sandmann, P.E.

P.E. | Project Manager

Eric earned his degree in civil engineering and sustainability from Arizona State University. He brings more than 10 years of experience in the engineering and design industries and is a licensed professional engineer in Arizona, Florida, Michigan, and New Jersey. At MEI, Eric collaborates with both team members and clients to translate customer goals into innovative solutions, ensuring projects are delivered seamlessly and effectively

Sharon A. Bouwense

Administrative Assistant

Sharon plays an essential role in the firm’s operations, supporting the Principal with key organizational activities. She successfully implemented and continues to manage the company’s accounting software, Ajera, ensuring efficient financial processes. In addition, Sharon oversees business invoicing, payroll, and licensing compliance, providing reliable administrative support that keeps the firm running seamlessly. 

BRETT T. JOHNSON, P.E.

PROJECT ENGINEER | FAA PART 107 UAV PILOT

Brett earned his civil engineering degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology and has more than six years of experience in the design of deep foundations, specializing in helical piles and micropiles. He is a licensed professional engineer in Montana and a certified drone operator. At MEI, Brett works closely with the Principal, contributing innovative problem-solving skills and actively supporting project delivery across a range of complex engineering challenges.

JAMES J. COUGHLIN, P.E.

P.E. | senior Project engineer

Jim is a graduate of Michigan State University with a Master’s Degree in Structures with an emphasis in structural vibrations. For 34 years, he served as a professor of engineering and physics at Northwestern Michigan College, where he shared his expertise and passion for problem-solving with students. Now retired from teaching, Jim continues to apply his knowledge by providing solutions to complex structural challenges, conducting pier reviews, and developing advanced FEA models. He is both a licensed professional engineer and a licensed residential builder in the State of Michigan. 

Abigail B. Machin, CAPM

Business Management support

Abby is a graduate of Northwood University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. She supports the firm’s business administration functions while driving process-oriented improvements that enhance efficiency. With her CAPM certification, Abby contributes strong organizational and project management expertise, helping the team operate with consistency. 

bRAYDEN r. HUNT, E.I.T.

Brayden is a graduate of the University of St. Thomas – Minnesota with a B.S. in civil engineering. He brings four years of experience in structural and geo-structural engineering, complemented by four years of service in the Navy. His background also includes residential construction, giving him a well-rounded perspective and practical skill set. Brayden also holds his E.I.T certification.  

Jonathan L. Snider

Project Designer

Jonathan joined the team with over 18 years of experience in Autodesk drafting, with an emphasis in the architectural and fabrication disciplines. He has extensive experience using 3D modeling software that produces detailed renderings for visual presentations. Jonathan collaborates with the Senior Project Designer to deliver projects that meet and exceed client expectations.

With over 40 years of experience, his career has focused on marine and pile driving construction, where he has contributed to a wide range of complex projects. He holds his E.I.T. certification and continues to apply his deep knowledge to challenging engineering environments.
